FAQs

What is an electric hydrofoil (eFoil)?

1

An eFoil is an electrically powered surfboard with a hydrofoil — a wing-like structure mounted beneath the board on a mast. As you gain speed, the board lifts completely out of the water and you glide silently above the surface. It feels like flying. No waves required, no engine noise, no wake — just you, the lake, and the mountains.

Do I need any experience to try it?

2

Most guests are flying above the water within their first session. Our instructors start you from the beginning and go at your pace. If you can stand up on a paddleboard or a wakeboard, you'll take to it quickly — and even if you can't, we'll get you there.

How far in advance can I book?

3

Sessions are bookable up to 10 days in advance. We find this works best for everyone — it gives you a chance to check the forecast before committing, and helps us keep our schedule running smoothly. Think of it the way any surfer would: check the conditions, then paddle out.

4

What if weather is bad on my session day?

The only hard stop is lightning — if there's any lightning within 10 miles, we reschedule, no exceptions. Light rain is fine. Wind above 20mph sustained will trigger a reschedule. If we cancel for weather, your session converts to a credit for rescheduling — we don't want you to miss out.

What time of year do you operate?

5

Our peak season runs mid-April through early October when Douglas Lake conditions are at their best. Shoulder season sessions in April, May, September, and October are available and often offer beautiful riding conditions with fewer people on the water.

Yes — our standard fleet accommodates riders up to 220 lbs. If you have questions about weight requirements please reach out before booking and we'll do our best to accommodate you.

6

Is there a weight limit?

Yes — riders must be at least 12 years old. Riders under 18 require a parent or guardian to sign the liability waiver. Parents are always welcome to watch from Driftwood Beach.

7

Is there a minimum age?

What safety equipment is provided?

8

All riders are provided a PFD (personal flotation device) and helmet. These are required for every session, no exceptions. We use manufacturer-specified safety equipment on every ride.

Do I need to know how to swim?

9

You should be comfortable in the water. You will fall off the board — everyone does, especially at first, and it's part of the fun. The lake is calm and the PFD keeps you afloat. Strong swimming ability is not required but basic water comfort is.

Clothes you don't mind getting wet — boardshorts, a swimsuit, athletic wear. We recommend a rash guard or lightweight long sleeve for sun protection. Bring a towel and a change of clothes. Water shoes or sandals that strap to your feet are ideal — flip flops are not suitable on the board.

What should I wear?

Do you offer wetsuits?

11

Yes — we keep a supply of wetsuits at the Smoky Mountain Surf Shop for shoulder season sessions when the water or air is cool. Ask when booking if you're coming in April, May, September, or October.
